DIBRUGARH: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday addressed a press conference at the Dibrugarh Secretariat, summarizing the key developments of his four-day visit to Upper Assam.
During this period, the Chief Minister’s office functioned directly from Dibrugarh, where he engaged with 42 organizations and interacted with citizens from Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, and Charaideo districts. While based in Dibrugarh, he cleared 40 files and nine official letters, and also chaired multiple review meetings addressing pressing issues concerning Sissiborgaon, Majuli, Mahmora, and Duliajan.
On the aviation front, Dr Sarma announced that starting from September 20, a morning flight will operate between Guwahati and Dibrugarh. Additionally, daily morning flights will begin on the Delhi–Jorhat and Guwahati–Silchar routes. Responding to media queries, the Chief Minister assured that efforts would be made to introduce evening flights to Dibrugarh as well.
Regarding the long-standing demand for the preservation of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala’s ancestral home in Tamulbari, the Chief Minister stated that while such initiatives become formal government projects when taken up officially, local communities and organizations should ideally take the lead in preserving cultural heritage. Nevertheless, he assured, “I will see what can be done from the government’s side as well.”
Commenting on the functioning of the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), Dr Sarma said that the public sector unit was currently running at a loss and surviving on government support. He stressed the need for a permanent solution, which includes initiating in-house finished product manufacturing to make the project self-sustaining.
On ensuring proper ethnic representation in autonomous councils, the Chief Minister reiterated that Matak people would vote in the Matak Council and Moran people in the Moran Council, preserving the integrity and representation of each community.
Responding to recent allegations by Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi regarding the situation in Dhubri being orchestrated by RSS-BJP forces, Dr Sarma strongly refuted the claims, accusing Gogoi of politicizing sensitive issues without grasping the ground reality.
“How can a Hindu person slaughter a cow, sever the head, and throw it in front of a Hindu temple? And what about the rest of the carcass? The act seems deliberately staged,” he remarked, questioning the intent behind the incident and dismissing the MP’s accusation as baseless and irresponsible.
