DHEKIAJULI: The Dhekiajuli unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) raised alarms over the escalating crime rates and the proliferation of harmful substances in the Dhekiajuli town and its neighbouring areas. In a concerted effort to address these issues, the AASU submitted memoranda to the Dhekiajuli Co-District Commissioner, the Circle Officer, and the Superintendent of Police via the Dhekiajuli Police authority, both addressed to the Senior Superintendent of Police.
The memoranda highlighted the detrimental impact of alcohol, cannabis, online gambling, and traditional betting practices like teer on the youth and families of Dhekiajuli. These activities were cited as contributing factors to the town’s rising crime rates and social unrest.
Leading the initiative, Sankar Das, Education Secretary of the AASU Sonitpur District Committee, emphasized the urgency of the situation. He was supported by Bhagyajyoti Nath and Bikash Kalita, the President and Acting General Secretary of the AASU Dhekiajuli unit, along with other AASU activists. The AASU’s action is part of a broader movement by AASU to combat illegal activities across Assam.
The students’ union urged authorities to implement stringent measures to curb these illicit activities and restore peace in Dhekiajuli. They also called upon the community to support efforts aimed at safeguarding the town’s youth and ensuring a secure environment for all residents.
