MANGALDAI: Sensation prevails in the greater Deomornoi area of Darrang district following a tragic incident of twin suicide involving an elderly couple. The incident took place on Monday night at Gorgori village near Deomornoi, where a septuagenarian couple died by hanging themselves in the same room of their residence.

According to Bikash Saikia, the gaon pradhan of the village, the victims—Bhadra Baruah and Joymoti Baruah—were parents to three married sons and four married daughters. They were residing with their two teenage granddaughters.

As per reports, like on other days, the couple had dinner with their granddaughters and went to sleep. However, when they didn’t come out of their bedroom the next morning, the granddaughters tried to wake them. When there was no response, they peeped through the window and were shocked to find both of them hanging from a wooden beam using a dhooti and a chadar.

While the exact reason behind the deaths is yet to be confirmed, locals suspect it to be a case of severe depression, possibly stemming from feelings of neglect or isolation from their children. Among their sons, the eldest resides with his wife in a nearby farmhouse, while the other two live in Gujarat and Mangaldai with their respective families due to professional commitments.

Darrang Superintendent of Police Prakash Sonowal, along with other senior officials, visited the site and initiated an investigation.
