DOOMDOOMA: An unexpected incident took place on Thursday night at the Gangadhar Chowdhury road near Ramakrishna Sevashram when Dinesh Chandra Lahkar (65 years), maternal uncle of Jitu Deka, former Ward Commissioner, was killed as a result of the sudden fall of the iron gate of a house on him.
It is learnt that the installation of the said gate was not complete and it was tied up with ropes and locked. There was a smaller gate just adjacent to it to facilitate movement.
Despite the keys to the locks of both the gates being with Lahkar, he chose to unlock the larger gate and removed the ropes. As a result, the gate fell on him and the unfortunate incident occurred.
It is learnt that Deka’s uncle had come to Doomdooma after the death of his elder sister who is Jitu’s mother about two months back on May 31 from Rangapara. At their request, he stayed at his sister’s house and looked after the newly-constructed house of his niece Bulbuli, younger sister of Jitu at GD Chaudhury road.
For protection of Bulbuli’s household items, he spent the night at the newly-constructed house and as luck would have it, met with this accident on Thursday night. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, his body was sent to Tinsukia for postmortem and would be taken to Rangapara for the last rites. The tragic incident cast a pall of gloom in the town.
