MANGALDAI: The 125th anniversary of the Darrang-Udalguri District Brahmin Sabha was successfully concluded on Sunday with a two-day vibrant programme at the Shri Shri Navagraha Temple at Chapai near here.
To mark the celebration, a collective Upanayana (sacred thread ceremony) was arranged free of cost for eligible boys and youths from Surya Bipra Daivagya Brahmin families of both the districts. According to Sarat Chandra Sharma, President, and Keshav Kumar Sharma, Secretary of the reception committee, many families could not perform the Upanayana ceremony for their children due to financial constraints. To provide relief to such families, it was arranged for 51 boys and youths from the two districts to undergo the ritual amidst chants of Vedic mantra, conch shell sounds, and Homa rituals.
Prior to this, the programme began with the Navagraha Puja in the morning followed by hoisting of the Sabha’s flag and homage paying function.
On the occasion of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi’s 135th birth anniversary, Madhab Sharma offered garlands, and Dr Prabodh Sharma lit the lamp in front of his portrait. Rituals such as fetching water for the Yajna, invoking the Sun and Fire, worshipping the Devguru, and performing the Shri Shri Vishnu Yajna were also conducted. In the collective Upanayana ceremony, a blessing function was also organized in the presence of guests like former minister Dr Zoii Nath Sarma, Dr Nareshwar Sarma, Chairman of Mangaldai Development Authority Pratap Bordoloi, retired principal Kunja Devi, and newly-elected Darrang Zilla Parishad member Rupali Devi. On the previous day, rituals including Shri Shri Navagraha Puja and Aarti were performed, followed by plantation of sandalwood saplings.
On the morning of June 8, the Vrata Bhanga (breaking of vows) ceremony for the Upanayana candidates, Shanti and Dana rituals, distribution of certificates to priests and Upanayana candidates, presentation of inspirational certificates to various individuals, and a community feast were organized.
