GUWAHATI: The Assam police department recently saw a reshuffle. IPS officer Partha Sarathi Mahanta has been appointed the new Commissioner of Police for Guwahati. This strategic move highlights the state's focus on strengthening its law enforcement leadership.

Partha Sarathi Mahanta, an IPS officer of the 1999 batch, has extensive experience and a proven track record in policing and public safety. Mahanta is known for his effective leadership and strategic vision, having delivered impactful results in his previous assignments.

Mahanta will replace the outgoing Commissioner of Police, Diganta Barah, in the crucial post. Before this appointment, he was working as the Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, working through varied responsibilities there, including crime control measures and intelligence operations. During this tenure, under him, it was said that he not only behaved proactively regarding solving problems of city policing but was equally meticulous over issues.

Earlier in 2024, Mahanta was promoted to the rank of Inspector General of Police from his earlier position as Deputy Inspector General of Police. This promotion underscored exemplary service and the trust the state's leadership had for him. His elevation as Commissioner of Police is perceived as a natural progression for such an officer.

With this appointment, Mahanta is expected to focus on enhancing public safety, improving crime prevention strategies, and fostering stronger community engagement in Guwahati.
