GAURISAGAR: The newly-constructed Harmotigarh Bridge on Dikhow River on the outskirts of Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district was inaugurated by the Sivasagar Loka Nirman Department (formerly Public Works Department) under the Chief Minister’s Signature Project connecting the former Amguri and Sivasagar constituencies in Sivasagar district without paving the ends of the bridge. Due to heavy rains in recent days, the soil at one end of the bridge has collapsed and created a deep pothole.

During the tenure of the then Chief Minister Sarbanonda Sonowal, the foundation stone of the bridge was laid by Late Sivasagar MLA Pranab Gogoi under the PWRD Signature Project at a cost of Rs 9,99,99,959 meeting the demand of the people of the Konwerpur area for conducive communication with NH37 Gaurisagar. The bridge was constructed by Shass Engineers.

After completion of the bridge, one approach side developed cracks. A few days later, the cracked portion was rebuilt. However, both ends of the bridge were filled with soil without paving. The bridge was immediately inaugurated by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on January 6 without any road being constructed from the south side to connect with NH37. With no other way, presently the residents of the Konwerpur area have to use the private road of a prominent businessman of Gaurisagar.

The bridge was inaugurated in a hurry without a direct connection with the newly-constructed four-lane highway. As a result, the people of Greater Konwepur area have been facing a lot of problems while travelling to and from Gaurisagar. After the inauguration of the bridge, the former Matiaghat (boat service) was completely closed. As a result, no alternative road is available to the locals.

Both ends of the bridge became very slippery during the rainy season. The local people have demanded the concerned authority to construct both the approaches of the road as well as the connected road with Gaurisagar but Sivasagar Loka Nirman Department has been turning a deaf ear.
