ORANG: In a major political shake-up, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) suffered a severe jolt in the Rowta constituency of Udalguri district as over 40 top-level leaders tendered mass resignations from the party. The political exodus is being seen as a strong reaction against the leadership of BTC Executive Member (EM) Dr Nilut Swargiary.

Reportedly, disillusioned by the internal functioning and leadership style within the party, several senior leaders including Gajen Hainary (former central committee member of UPPL), Tuneswar Boro (current Chairman of Kacharichang VCDC), Ghanshyam Mahanta (Vice-President, Rowta Block UPPL), and Shahidul Islam (Vice-President, Rowta Youth Committee) formally resigned from UPPL on July 21. Sources suggest that over 400 supporters and workers were also likely to join the BJP soon under their leadership.

This dramatic turn of events has intensified the political atmosphere in Rowta, one of the backward constituencies under BTC. As BTC elections approach, political parties are gearing up for a fierce contest. While the BJP has indicated it may go solo in the upcoming elections, UPPL and BPF are also leaving no stone unturned to strengthen their bases.

The BJP, currently in power at the state level, stated that decisions on alliances would be considered only after the election results. This stirred further speculation and political maneuvering in the region. The electorate too is highly watchful, as dissatisfaction over the last five years of governance lingers, especially regarding the underperformance of several elected representatives.

Voters in Rowta, who had pinned high hopes on Dr Nilut Swargiary during the previous elections, now express disappointment. Allegations of arrogance, incompetence, and self-serving behaviour have been leveled against him by a section of conscious citizens. Many believe that Swargiary has failed to live up to the expectations of the public and has instead prioritized personal gains over constituency development.

The growing discontent triggered demands for either a fresh BJP candidate or a new face from within UPPL to contest from the Rowta constituency. As the election inches closer, the buzz around potential alternatives is growing louder. If reports suggesting that Mazbat MLA Charan Boro might contest from Rowta prove true, political analysts predict that Nilut Swargiary’s defeat could become inevitable.

In summary, the Rowta constituency is set for a politically charged and keenly watched electoral battle. The resignation of key UPPL figures has not only created ripples within the party but has also ignited hopes for change among the electorate.
