MANGALDAI: Embankment construction along rivers is expected to be completed before the onset of the monsoon season. However, due to the negligence and inefficiency of certain corrupt contractors, the work often remains incomplete during the dry season. Instead, they are seen rushing to finish the task only after the rains begin—often delivering substandard work, which has left Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister Pijush Hazarika stunned. An enraged minister immediately directed the Chief Engineer to suspend Kishore Pathak, the Executive Engineer of the Mangaldai Division of the WRD, with immediate effect. Additionally, he ordered the police to file a case and arrest the contractor, Naba Talukdar, for negligence in work. Minister Pijush Hazarika, who has long emphasized the timely completion of repair and reconstruction work on Darrang’s embankments, arrived in Darrang on Tuesday without prior notice. Despite heavy rain, he personally inspected several embankments on foot, even as they had become slippery with mud. Upon witnessing the poor quality of work on the Rs. 17 crore Dimila River embankment project in the Sipajhar constituency, the minister became furious. He promptly ordered the suspension of the Executive Engineer for allegedly maintaining an unholy nexus with the corrupt contractor and instructed the police to take legal action against the latter.
