DIGBOI: “The Panchayat office is no less than a mini secretariat for the villagers. Its role is not just to administer, but to listen, engage, and lead with vision and compassion,” said Digboi BJP MLA Suren Phukan on Saturday afternoon.

The legislator was speaking at a special felicitation programme held at the newly constructed Tingrai Panchayat office to honour the recently elected panchayat body. Extending his heartfelt congratulations to the new representatives, Phukan stated, “Your success is not merely a personal achievement but a reflection of the trust, hopes, and expectations of the community you represent.”

Welcoming the new team led by the young president Prabal Gogoi, the MLA urged the members to serve the people with sincerity and impartiality while implementing government projects and policies. “As the new custodians of local governance, you carry a great responsibility—one that demands integrity, transparency, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people,” he added.

Phukan also suggested that the panchayat should consider issuing local man certificates free of cost to the poor and extremely poor beneficiaries. He further emphasized the need for strict measures to prevent government schemes from reaching any illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, if present in the area.

The MLA praised Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for his ongoing efforts to evict illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and reclaim encroached land in the state.

Meanwhile, Prabal Gogoi, the newly elected Panchayat president, after felicitating the former president, ward members, and office bearers, called for the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure progress and development in a transparent manner.

“Together, let us strive for inclusive growth and build a Tingrai Panchayat that sets an example for others to follow,” said Dilip Singh, the newly elected vice president, during his address.
