NAZIRA: Nazira Press Club and Nazira Hangabadik Mancha have strongly condemned the unparliamentarily remarks made by Congress MLA A.K. Rashid Alam against ND24’s Editor-in-Chief, Rajdeep Bailung Baruah, during a live television programme. The incident has sparked outrage among local journalist bodies, who have demanded immediate action from the Congress party.
Bhashkar Jyoti Borgohain, president of the Nazira Press Club, criticized the MLA’s comments and urged the Congress party to take strict disciplinary action against him to prevent such incidents from recurring. The Press Club also called for an end to the ongoing harassment and intimidation of journalists, emphasizing the need to uphold media freedom.
Nabajyoti Buragohain, secretary of the Nazira Press Club, announced that a protest meeting will be held on July 20 at 1 pm to discuss the issue further and mobilize collective action against such behaviour.
Meanwhile, the Nazira Hangabadik Mancha also issued a strong statement condemning the MLA’s conduct. In a press release signed by president Mintu Chitrakar and secretary Pradip Hazarika, the organization expressed serious concern over the MLA’s disrespectful attitude towards the media. The statement highlighted that such behaviour towards journalists, who represent the fourth pillar of democracy, is highly unacceptable and must be addressed.
Both organizations have jointly demanded that the Congress party take immediate punitive measures against the MLA and ensure that such acts of insulting and harassing media personnel are not repeated in the future.
