NAGAON: Women from various parts of Karbi Anglong district gathered on Thursday at Nagaon to protest and demand justice for the murder of Namrata Engtipi. The protesters, led by the United Forum of Women of Karbi Anglong, held a silent march from the Clock Tower to the District Commissioner’s office.
During the stir, the agitators carried placards with slogans such as ‘Justice for Namrata’s murder,’ ‘We want justice,’ ‘Hang the killer,’ and ‘Judicial inquiry into Namrata’s murder.’ They demanded that the accused, Saddam Hussain, be given the death penalty and that a judicial inquiry be conducted into the case.
The protesters alleged that the Nagaon police’s initial handling of the case was questionable, particularly in relation to the identification of the victim’s body. They criticized the police for allowing the Raha family to cremate a body that did not belong to them.
The protesters also accused the government and police of failing to ensure the safety of women and girls. They submitted a memorandum to the Nagaon District Commissioner demanding justice for Namrata Engtipi’s murder and the death penalty for the accused. The Nagaon Karbi Students’ Union had also held a protest in Nagaon on Wednesday with similar demands.
