MANGALDAI: The ceremonial release of a postage stamp by the Department of Post, Government of India, will mark the 131st Krishak Swahid Divas celebration at historic Pothorughat in Darrang district. Meanwhile brisk preparation is going on to celebrate the Krishak Swahid Divas at Pothorughat in holy memory of 140 Krishak Swahids who were brutally gunned down by the tyrant British Police while the rural farmers raised their voice in a non-violent way against the hike in land revenue and tax at Pothorughat in Darrang district on January 28 of 1894. The Krishak Swahid Divas organizing committee headed by legislator Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi as the President, with active cooperation of district administration and Agriculture department has chalked out a three-day long detailed program on January 26, 27 and 28.
An on-the-spot drawing competition among the school students will mark the beginning of the celebration at Pothorughat followed by a felicitation function at village Byaspara of Sipajhar, the home village of 26 freedom fighters of the district including the Krishak Swahids. The District Administration will accord felicitation to the family members of the Krishak Swahids and the freedom fighters in a befitting function in presence of Minister Ranjit Das. Significantly, several roads will also be dedicated in memory of the freedom fighters. In this function to be presided by Dr Nareswar Sarma, senior journalist Bhargab Kumar Das will offer the memorial lecture on the role of the Darrangi People in the freedom struggle with reference to the Krishak Vidroh at Pothorughat.
A state-level open quiz competition on the freedom struggle and Krishak Vidroh of Pothorughat, under the initiative of Natun Dyouranga Barta and Prohelika Quiz Forum, will mark the beginning of the second day’s program on January 27, followed by the inauguration of the air conditioned auditorium by Dr Amarendra Narayan Dev. A Krishi Mela and an exhibition of books, literature, souvenirs and photographs related to the freedom movement and Krishak Vidroh will be points of attraction. In the function, five prominent persons will be offered felicitation in recognition of their contribution in different fields.
The open session of the Krishak Swahid Divas on January 28 will be attended by Union Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, Assam Ministers Keshab Mahanta and Atul Bora. Parliamentarian of Darrang-Udalguri and President of State BJP Dilip Saikia, in presence of the senior officials of the Department of Post, will ceremonially release the postage stamp on the Krishak Vidroh at Pothorughat. A souvenir published by the organizing committee will also be released at the function. Besides screening of a documentary on the Krishak Vidroh at Pothorughat in the evening, eminent artistes Dipen Barua, Tarali Sarma, and Birina Pathak will enthral the musical evening on the closing day.
