TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia district administration, and also the Tinsukia Municipal Board, have miserably failed to tame the defiant roadside vendors despite eviction on several occasions. Surprisingly these vendors who have encroached upon main arterial roads of Tinsukia town, including footpaths, were back to business right in front of police, TMB officials just an hour after the eviction by the same officials.

The issue of encroachment, traffic and parking problems were even raised before the Chief Minister during media interaction at Tinsukia recently. The Chief Minister even asked the DC and officers concerned to settle these issues as early as possible. Ironically, things deteriorated further. The entire GNB Road from Vishal Mega Mart to Tinkunia is under the grip of vendors with vegetable and fruit vendors, fast food stalls surfacing after dusk every day and occupying whatever space is available besides car parking, virtually leaving no room for pedestrians and traffic movement. The citizens of Tinsukia desire that the Deputy Commissioner must visit the road incognito to see the state of affairs.

Conflict of interest and lack of coordination among the various executing agencies are believed to be the main reasons for the present condition of Tinsukia town. This issue was also raised before the Chief Minister. According to a TMB source, the traders are in nexus with police and the police usually do not assist when the TMB takes action. The source further said that it is essential to establish a cohesive attitude among primary stakeholders like TMB, Transport Department, Police, civil administration and PWD so as to bring a visible change in Tinsukia town.
