Golaghat: The Sarupathar co-district administration celebrated New Year’s Day by distributing helmets to two-wheeler riders in various places of the co-district, in collaboration with local businesses and law enforcement agencies intensifying the ongoing road safety campaign aimed at ensuring the safety of all road users in the co-district. The campaign focuses on curbing drunk driving, preventing rash driving, and promoting responsible road behaviour during the entire year-end festive season.

On the occasion of New Year’s Day, the co-district administration, in partnership with local businesses, distributed helmets to two-wheeler riders at various locations across the co-district. This initiative is part of the ongoing road safety campaign to protect citizens from accidents and promote the use of helmets as a basic safety measure.

“We are grateful for the generous support from our local vendors and businesses, who have come forward to contribute to this important cause. Today’s helmet distribution is a sign of our commitment to reducing road accidents in Sarupathar,” said Ankur Das, Co-District Commissioner, Sarupathar.

In response to concerns for child safety, the Co-District Administration plans to coordinate with local vendors to ensure the availability of small-sized helmets specifically for children. This initiative aims to enhance the safety of young riders and promote a culture of road safety from an early age. In addition to the helmet distribution programme, the Co-District Administration has ramped up its efforts to ensure road safety with stringent surveillance and law enforcement.

Roadblocks (Naka checking) are being set up across key routes to monitor and prevent drunken driving and riding without helmets. This initiative is a critical part of the district’s efforts to reduce road fatalities and promote responsible driving during the festive period.

Special vigilance is also being conducted at popular picnic spots. To ensure public safety, the administration is mandating that all picnic-goers leave these locations by 4pm. Police and excise teams are also monitoring for public drinking and any signs of drunken driving among picnic parties. The co-district commissioner himself visited the Dhansiripar Picnic spot on New Year’s Eve to ensure safety of all picnic goers.

The road safety campaign is a result of successful collaboration between the co-district administration, local police, the excise department, and community businesses. This collaboration has been pivotal in strengthening the road safety measures and ensuring tighter monitoring on the ground.

Earlier this week, the Co-District Commissioner hosted a meeting with community members to discuss the ongoing road safety campaign and to gather feedback from local residents. Key proposals from the meeting include the installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations across the district to monitor traffic violations and prevent encroachment on pavements. As part of the road safety initiative, the administration has launched a miking campaign, broadcasting safety instructions and guidelines via mobile vans and fixed loudspeakers across the entire co-district. These broadcasts will remind the public about key safety measures, including the use of helmets, adhering to speed limits, and not driving under the influence. The Sarupathar co-district administration remains committed to ensuring a safe and accident-free environment for all its residents and visitors. The ongoing campaign will continue throughout the festive season, and the administration encourages all road users to follow traffic rules and be vigilant at all times.
