TEZPUR: In a major push to clamp down on rising criminal activities, the Sonitpur police, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha, have launched a series of intensive operations across the district in recent days. These targeted raids aimed at dismantling networks involved in drug trafficking, illegal arms possession, gambling, theft, cattle smuggling, and the distribution of illicit liquor, have led to significant seizures and the arrest of several individuals.

One of the key operations was carried out late at night in Paruwa under Tezpur Police Station, where acting on credible intelligence, police apprehended Safiqul Islam (27) and Anarul Islam (20), both residents under Tezpur PS. From their possession, authorities recovered a .22 calibre pistol, two face masks, and two motorcycles. Investigators are currently probing their potential links to larger criminal syndicates.

In another significant raid at Rwngchandri village near the Khaowla Centre under Dhekiajuli Police Station, police seized two 65 mm pistols, sixteen live rounds, two walkie-talkies, and five mobile phones. Three suspects—Gwbda Basumatary of Udalguri, Rohit Basumatary of Rwngchandri, and Akheb Basumatary of Arunbari—were arrested. Preliminary investigations indicate the group may have been planning dacoity and extortion activities.

The crackdown further led to the arrest of two additional suspects—Rubul Boro alias Pandey from Nalbari and Ansula Islary from Chirang district—believed to be connected to the same criminal network. In a related operation, police apprehended Aftarsan Narjary alias Dakhor and Philip Basumatary from a hidden camp in the foothills of Arunachal near the Sopai River. Two country-made rifles, khukris, torches, and mobile phones were recovered from the camp, suspected to be a base of operations for criminal activity.

Separately, Thelamara Police, during a naka checking at Kochgaon near a Namghar, arrested Ijajul Haque of Baligaon Bengali village with 33.04 grams of suspected heroin in his possession. He remains in custody as legal proceedings commence. These sweeping actions underscore the Sonitpur Police’s renewed commitment to restoring law and order. Authorities have assured that similar operations will continue with greater intensity in the coming days as part of an ongoing effort to dismantle criminal networks in the district.
