SILCHAR: The AIUDF received another blow in Sribhumi as all the office bearers of the party including its District President resigned from their primary memberships. Citing utter disillusionment with the leaders, the Sribhumi AIUDF President Azizur Rahman and all important post holders sent their resignations to the central committee of the party. The prime reasons they cited in their resignation letters were the party leaders’ reported tacit understanding with the ruling party and the MLAs’ role as mute spectators despite a series of anti-Muslim decisions by the present BJP government.

Azizur Rahman said that the party workers and supporters were extremely disheartened with the leaders’ activities. “The AIUDF was termed as a ‘B team’ of the BJP, but the leaders did not care to prove the allegation wrong,” Rahman maintained.

Sribhumi or erstwhile Karimganj was a strong fort of the Badruddin Ajmal brigade since its inception because of the population pattern of the bordering district. Even when the Karimganj Lok Sabha seat was reserved for the SC, the AIUDF could get its candidate elected in the Parliament. The party had a number of MLAs from Karimganj particularly from the minority-dominated South Karimganj and erstwhile Badarpur Assembly constituencies. But during the last Lok Sabha election, the party saw a bashing from its core vote bank throughout the state, and in the Barak Valley, it was virtually reduced to  a non-entity.
