Tripura Advocate Manhandled in Hailakandi While Defending Online Trading Scam Accused

Tripura-based advocate, along with his assistant, faced public wrath in Hailakandi as he appeared in the district court to defend his client, accused in an online trading scam.

SILCHAR: In an unfortunate turn of events, a Tripura-based advocate, along with his assistant, faced public wrath in Hailakandi as he appeared in the district court to defend his client, accused in an online trading scam. Arindam Bhattacharjee, an advocate based in Agartala and his associate Bishal Das were manhandled and their car was vandalised by an irate mob on Tuesday evening. Bhattacharjee appeared in the district court in Hailakandi to defend his client Partha Pratim Debnath, who allegedly ran ‘Finsurge Trading’ and fled with crores of rupees after duping hundreds of customers. Hailakandi Police recently arrested Dipanjan Nath, one of the accomplices of Debnath, who hailed from North Tripura. Dipanjan had reportedly confessed that Partha Pratim was the mastermind of the scam and they collected Rs 16 crore from customers assuring them huge returns.

On Tuesday, Arindam Bhattacharjee and Bishal Das arrived at Hailakandi to appear for Debnath in the district court. After the hearing, they were travelling back to Agartala by the SUV car which was earlier seen being used by Debnath. People who invested in the trading company stopped the car, dragged out Bhattacharjee and Das and reportedly harassed them physically. They also vandalised the car. Later, police arrived at the spot and rescued Bhattacharjee and Das. Later in the night, the Hailakandi Police escorted them to Badarpur Police Station where colleagues of Bhatacharjee were supposed to receive them.

Kamal Chowdhury, an advocate of Hailakandi who accompanied Bhatacharjee to Badarpur, told this correspondent that the incident was very unfortunate. Prashanta Bhatacharjee, younger brother of the advocate while speaking to this correspondent from Agartala, informed that Bhattacharjee and Das were on their way back to home.
