LAKHIMPUR: The World Consumer Rights Day was observed at Panigaon OPD College of Lakhimpur district under the auspices of the Department of Economics and Legal Literacy Club of the College.
World Consumer Rights Day is observed on March 15 every year with an aim to raise global awareness about consumer rights and promote consumer protection. The day is also commemorated to be aware about the market injustices across the world. It is an annual event that celebrates solidarity within the international consumer movement. This year the theme of World Consumer Rights Day 2023 is ‘Empowering Consumers Through Clean Energy Transitions’. It aims to raise awareness of consumer empowerment and their role to push for a faster clean energy transition. By observing the day, people across the world have supported all consumers’ basic rights, demanding that those rights be protected and respected and denouncing market injustices.
The event organized at Panigaon OPD College on the occasion was inaugurated by Principal Dr Suresh Kumar Dutta, who is also a prominent columnist. In his lecture, Dr Dutta highlighted the problems a consumer faced in his day-to-day life due to market injustice. He also threw light on consumer rights in India. “The act embeds consumers’ right to be heard at an appropriate forum, right to seek redressal in case of unfair trade practices, right to consumer education, right to goods and services at competitive prices, right to be informed about the quality, potency, purity, standard and price of goods and services and right to be protected against wrong marketing of goods and services which are hazardous to the life and property,” Dr Dutta said in his lecture.
On the other hand, Anup Khanal, the secretary of the District Legal Service Authority, Lakhimpur, attended the event as resource person. He delivered an informative lecture on ‘Legal Literacy Programme on Consumer Rights, Consumer Law and Food Safety Act’. During the course of his lecture, the Secretary of DLSA, Lakhimpur laid stress on consumers’ awareness on environmental protection in addition to highlighting the activities of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
“FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety,” the resource person added. Retired General Manager of the State Bank of India, Kulanath Bhorali and Professor of LTK College, Badan Kalita also took part as resource persons in the event which was held under the management of Legal Literacy Club coordinator Dr BD Nisha, Assistant professors Dr Rakhi Deudhai Phukan and Bijay Lakshmi Das.
