IMPHAL: The Manipur cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday night, approved the appointment of Arjuna awardee Naorem Roshibina Devi as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP-Sports), as per reports.

The cabinet also approved the recruitment of 80 sportspersons into various state government departments. Athletes who won gold medals in the 36th and 37th National Games and the 19th Asian Games will get jobs in Class III and IV posts. The government will make the hiring process easier for them.

Naorem Roshibina Devi was honored for her great achievements, including a silver medal at the 19th Asian Games in China (2023), a silver medal at the World Wushu Championship in the USA (2023), and a gold medal at the Moscow Wushu Stars Championship in Russia (2023).

Notably, Roshibina Devi was awarded the Arjuna Award 2023 by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 9, 2024. On January 13, 2024, the former Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey, presented her with a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh at the Raj Bhavan.

This decision comes after a two-week protest by athletes participating in the ongoing National Games. The protesters had been demanding the state government to fulfil its commitment of offering employment opportunities to medalists from previous competitions.

The demonstrations took place outside the official residence of CM N. Biren Singh, with athletes urging the government to take immediate action.
