SHILLONG: In a major operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) caught five Bangladeshi nationals trying to smuggle money across the Indo-Bangladesh border in South Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

The suspects were caught with 810 Bangladeshi Taka in a known smuggling hotspot. The operation is part of the BSF’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal activities along the border.

There were more crackdowns earlier this week in East Jaintia Hills and West Garo Hills districts, where several smuggling attempts were stopped. The seized items included IV cannula sets, 2,000 bottles of illegal cough syrup, and a Tata truck, worth around Rs. 52.76 lakh.

The BSF has increased patrols and surveillance in areas known for smuggling, especially in difficult terrain like South Garo Hills. Experts believe currency smuggling is connected to larger trafficking networks in the area, stressing the need for continuous watchfulness.

The BSF’s proactive measures aim to dismantle these networks and enhance security along the Indo-Bangladesh frontier, ensuring the safety and stability of the region.

Earlier, on January 20, 2025, the Border Security Force (BSF) in Meghalaya caught five Bangladeshi nationals and stopped several smuggling attempts along the border. Acting on a tip-off, BSF troops from the 200 Battalion carried out a focused operation in South Garo Hills and stopped the individuals involved in illegal activities.

The five arrested individuals were identified as Md. Sakibul Basir (20), Adnan Mahamod Rohim (22), Sojib Ahamed (17), Md. Sakib Hussain (19), and Md. Saju (27), all from Mymensingh district in Bangladesh. Their arrests show the BSF’s dedication to stopping illegal cross-border activities.
