SHILLONG: In a bold urban renewal initiative, the Meghalaya Government has announced the pedestrianization of Khyndailad—commonly known as Police Bazar—aiming to transform the city’s commercial hub into a more accessible and aesthetically enhanced public space.

Speaking at a press conference, Cabinet Minister and MDA 2 spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh revealed that starting immediately, vehicular movement in the area will be restricted from 7 AM to 9 pm every day. The only exceptions will be for residents with official passes and school drop-offs during working days. “On holidays, there will be absolutely no vehicle movement in the designated pedestrian zone, except in emergencies,” Lyngdoh clarified.

To facilitate the transition, the Shillong Municipal Board has begun collecting resident details to issue vehicular access passes. “Only residents of the stretch will receive passes, not shop owners who reside elsewhere,” Lyngdoh added. The government is also implementing several infrastructure upgrades, including 15 new washrooms in the MUDA complex, drinking water stations, and improved lighting for vendors. The initiative is designed not only to enhance pedestrian experience but also to provide a dignified environment for street vendors.

“We are extremely happy with the High Court of Meghalaya’s appreciation of the professional manner in which vendors have been relocated, ensuring free pedestrian movement while accommodating livelihoods,” Lyngdoh noted. In a high-level meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Snaiwbhalang Dhar and senior urban officials, the decision was taken to launch immediate beautification works. These include installing new signage, repairing and replacing broken tiles, and giving the area a comprehensive visual uplift. “You will begin to see changes within the next two weeks,” Lyngdoh assured.

As part of the vendor support program, the government will distribute Rs 10,000 cheques to individual vendors on August 5, fulfilling a commitment made under the urban upgrade scheme.
