SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) chief Conrad K. Sangma campaigned today in Jirang constituency for party candidate Sosthenes Sohtun ahead of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) election, urging voters to back NPP for stability and inclusive governance.
“The upcoming election is very crucial. Many political parties are trying to play communal politics. They are trying to divide our people. NPP is a secular party and has been working for inclusive development. We have to unite and vote for NPP to give a befitting response to parties trying to spread hate and mistrust,” Sangma stated, emphasizing the need for unity. He highlighted Meghalaya’s reputation as a peaceful state and urged citizens to think about the future while making their electoral choice. “Our MLA Sohtun has played a very constructive role as an MLA and has ensured many development interventions in the constituency for the last seven years. It is now imperative that we vote for him as MDC to allow him to work with the government to strengthen the district council,” he said, lauding Sohtun’s leadership.
Reaffirming NPP’s commitment to resolving border disputes and maintaining law and order, Sangma said, “He will always voice for any issue related to border disputes and law and order situations that arise and seek government intervention.” He also underscored the critical role of district councils in safeguarding the interests of tribal communities through dialogue and consultation.
“The wave of NPP is very strong in all the five constituencies of Ri Bhoi. The people of the district have shown their faith in the leadership of the party, and we are confident that the council election result will be in favor of NPP,” he asserted, expressing confidence in the party’s victory in both KHADC and JHADC.
He pointed to discontent within rival parties, saying, “Many sitting MLAs from other political parties are speaking against their own parties. They are confused and have lost faith in their party’s leadership. They are openly speaking against their own party. It is a clear indication that they have accepted defeat and are even saying in many areas that people should come out and vote for NPP.”
Sangma also announced that the 39th National Games 2027 would be hosted in Meghalaya, calling it a historic achievement. “We never imagined that National Games would be held in the state. But today, the Indian Olympic Association and Government of India are confident in our vision to promote sports in the state,” he said, adding that the NPP-led government is committed to creating a robust sports ecosystem, including infrastructure and training for athletes.
“The NPP-led government is creating an ecosystem for sports, building infrastructure, and providing training to athletes,” he said, assuring that the state will have world-class sports facilities across Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Hills in the next two years.
He further stated that sports infrastructure would not be confined to Shillong, Jowai, and Tura but would also extend to rural and interior areas. “As per the Meghalaya Sports Policy, we will provide government jobs to the medalists of the National Games. I would also like to inform that athletes from the state should prepare well and win medals in the 2027 National Games and avail the opportunity to get government jobs,” he added. Encouraging the youth to seize the opportunity, Sangma said, “Be prepared and win medals for the state, and the government will take care.”
