SHILLONG: United Democratic Party (UDP) on Friday unanimously appointed Titosstarwell Chyne as its new General Secretary, filling the vacuum left by Jemino Mawthoh’s resignation and signalling a calculated reshaping of its leadership ahead of the next electoral battle. The crucial Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting was convened at the party’s Shillong headquarters.
With two and a half years still remaining before Meghalaya heads to the polls, the UDP is clearly charting a long-term strategy — recalibrating its core command and tightening organisational discipline for sustained political engagement.
“We had not had CEC for the last 6 months. So the first agenda is like a post mortem for the party, how to strengthen the party from now onwards and the main agenda is to elect a general secretary because since the month of June put general secretary Jemino Mawthoh has resigned so it is compulsory as a big party we should have full time general secretary. So central Executive Committee they have entrust me the role,” Chyne said.
The General Secretary’s post, often described as the nerve centre of a party’s grassroots mobilisation and strategic planning, now falls under Chyne’s stewardship — a leader hailed for his consensus-building skills and political acumen, tasked with steering the UDP’s organizational revival in the run-up to the state elections.
