SHILLONG: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Meghalaya Parliamentary Party leader and Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma, on Friday lashed out at the state government for its failure to address the growing unemployment crisis, accusing it of neglecting even the most basic responsibility of filling vacant government posts. “The government of the day doesn’t even bother to fill up vacancies—positions left vacant due to retirement, promotion, or even the premature demise of employees. Thousands of government jobs remain unfilled,” he said.
Sangma recalled a recent State Security Commission meeting where it was decided that all vacancies in the police department must be filled by March, casting doubt on the administration’s ability to honour its own commitments. “Is it going to be completed by March? That is the decision that was taken as an assurance for the commission. But failure after failure has become a pattern. When issues are raised, authorities, policymakers, and even the Chief Minister himself are quick to respond with reassurances, giving people hope, but their actions remain contrary to their promises,” he stated.
He pointed out that the Voice of the People Party’s (VPP) electoral success was driven largely by young voters frustrated with the government’s inaction. “If you analyze the election results, you will see that the majority of votes that gravitated toward VPP came from the youth. Unemployment is a challenge for every government, but what is alarming is that this administration has made no effort to fill even the existing vacancies,” Sangma said.
Slamming the government’s lack of initiatives to promote entrepreneurship, he argued that Meghalaya, despite being a small state, has vast economic potential and access to a market of over a billion people. “We must congratulate all budding entrepreneurs who are exploring possibilities despite the odds. But to harness this potential, we need a supportive ecosystem. You cannot rely solely on the success stories of ambitious young men and women. The government must also create employment spaces within and outside the government sector. Depriving the people of access to job opportunities is something I strongly condemn. The government must do justice to the aspirations of the people based on the state’s potential,” Sangma asserted.
