SHILLONG: In a powerful display of solidarity and outrage, the Shillong Citizen Forum (SCF) organized a candlelight vigil at Khyndai Lad (Police Bazar) on Sunday evening, following the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists.

Hundreds gathered in front of the old Assembly building, holding placards and banners, to denounce the heinous act and express their collective grief. The vigil drew a large crowd, reflecting the widespread anger and sorrow resonating across the state.

As a mark of protest and mourning, the Forum has called for a complete shutdown of all shops and business establishments across Greater Shillong on Monday, April 28. Organisers have appealed to shopkeepers and businesses to voluntarily close operations, urging citizens to stand united against terror.

In addition to the shutdown, the SCF plans to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister and Home Minister of India through the Governor and Chief Minister of Meghalaya, demanding strong and decisive action against the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack. “All peace-loving citizens of Greater Shillong, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion, are invited to join the movement and share their voices for justice,” the Forum said.

Meanwhile, Shillong’s business community has strongly condemned the attack, labelling it a “brutal and cowardly assault on innocent lives.” Extending full support to the shutdown call, business leaders expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and urged citizens to participate in the collective day of mourning.
