SHILLONG: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has made it clear that the suspension of North Shillong legislator Adelbert Nongrum and four others will not be revoked any time soon, signalling a hardened stance on internal discipline.
Party spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh, while addressing the matter, stated unequivocally, “As of today, the suspension stands, and we will see, as we have decided that this is the suspension, not the expulsion, and it depends on their behaviour. It depends on how they act from now onwards towards the party. The decision will be reviewed accordingly.”
The VPP had suspended Nongrum for a period of three years, citing his alleged involvement in anti-party activities and his failure to provide a satisfactory explanation in response to a show cause notice served on March 1, 2025. Alongside him, four others were also suspended.
While the party maintains that the suspension is not equivalent to expulsion, it has not indicated any urgency in reviewing the disciplinary action. “The suspension is for three years, so let it continue, after which the decision will be reviewed,” Myrboh reiterated, hinting that reconciliation may only be possible after the full term of suspension if behaviour improves.
With the party showing no signs of backing down, the road to redemption for Nongrum and his fellow suspended members remains uncertain and firmly tied to their conduct in the coming months.
