AGARTALA: Bikash Das, a resident of the Hailakandi District in Assam, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for being allegedly associated with one of the largest chit fund scams involving the Tripura-based company Suchana Real Projects Pvt. Ltd. Bikash Das was caught on February 3, 2025, in Bhiwandi, Thane District, Maharashtra, thus ending more than a decade-long silence.
An official press release by the CBI stated that Das had been on the run since 2013, and two cases related to the allegations of fraud against him were pending. The Government of Tripura investigated the cases and then forwarded them to the CBI. The Special Judge in Agartala declared him a proclaimed offender on 16 August 2024, followed by the issuing of a standing warrant for his arrest.
In an effort to track him down, the CBI announced a reward of Rs. 20,000 for any information leading to his capture. Technical intelligence and surveillance helped the agency locate his hideout in Kalhar, Bhiwandi. Acting on this intelligence, officials moved swiftly and arrested him on February 2, 2025.
Das was accused of scamming hundreds of investors in 2013 after he and the other directors of Suchana Real Projects Pvt. Ltd. promised high returns. The company abruptly shut down in 2012 without repaying investors, leading to an estimated siphoning off of more than Rs. 6.6 lakh, leaving investors in financial distress.
On January 21, 2025, the CBI finally filed a charge sheet against Das, his co-accused Sujit Das, and the company for fraud after a very thorough investigation. Now that he has been arrested, Das is likely to appear in court where he will have further legal actions taken against him.
