Itanagar: The eighth edition of the Hangpan Dada memorial trophy (HDMT) under-16 district level football and volleyball tournament culminated at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso high altitude sports stadium at Tawang, in Arunachal Pradesh, showcasing exceptional talent and sportsmanship among boys and girls from across the district. The Tawang boys’ football team emerged as champions with a commanding 4-0 win over Mogto in the football final, while Lungla dominated the girls’ football and volleyball events, as well as boys’ volleyball. The closing ceremony was presided over by local MLA Namgey Tsering, who urged youth to avoid drugs and other anti-social activities, and instead invest their energy in sports and healthy competition. The lawmaker emphasised that sports play a crucial role in building disciplined and responsible citizens and pledged continued support for youth and sports development in Tawang. The tournament saw standout performances from several athletes, with Leki Phuntso of Mogto named best footballer in the boys’ category, and Dechin Yangton of Lungla awarded best footballer among girls. Lungla also secured volleyball titles for both boys and girls, with Pam Phuntso and Tenzin Wangmu earning the best player awards respectively. Organised annually in memory of martyr Hangpan Dada, the event continues to inspire and nurture young sports talent across the state, fostering unity, discipline, and healthy competition among the district’s youth.
