Guwahati: SAI, SSA bag top honours in All Assam ID Elite Boxing Championship

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and State Sports Academy (SSA) emerged champions in the women’s and men’s categories, respectively, at the All Assam ID Elite Boxing Championship.

GUWAHATI: The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and State Sports Academy (SSA) emerged champions in the women’s and men’s categories, respectively, at the All Assam ID Elite Boxing Championship. The event concluded on Monday at the SAI Sports Complex in the city.

SAI dominated the women’s division, claiming 7 medals (4 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) to top the medal tally. NF Railway secured the runners-up position with 4 medals. Meanwhile, SSA led the men’s category with 4 medals (2 gold, 2 silver). Assam Police also performed commendably, finishing second with 4 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze).

The championship featured nine categories in the men’s section and eight in the women’s. All final bouts were held on Monday. Hemanta Kalita, secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association, announced that the gold medalists in both categories will represent Assam at the upcoming Senior Elite National Boxing Championship scheduled to be held in January.

The closing ceremony was graced by Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain as the chief guest, along with dignitaries such as Ashok Bharali (Treasurer, Assam Olympic Association), Dhrubajyoti Maral (Vice Chairman, Food and Civil Supply Corporation, and former boxer), Hemanta Kalita, and other notable sports organizers- Anup Choudhury, Rajib Prakash Baruah, Kalyam Gogoi and Bishnuram Nunisa.

Addressing the gathering, Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain praised the Assam Amateur Boxing Association for promoting budding boxers and expressed optimism about producing more Olympic medalists from the state. She shared plans to resume training soon after a brief post-Paris Olympics break, preparing for upcoming tournaments.

Gold medal winners: Women’s-Kampi Boro (45-48kg), Saraswati Boro (45-48kg), Aroti Doley (51-54 kg), Sumitra Brahma (54-57 kg), Manju Basumatary (57-60 kg), Ankushita Boro (60-65 kg), Pwilao Basumatary (70-75 kg) and Bhagyabati Kachari (80-80+kg). Men’s- Gourav Mazumdar (47-50kg), Bibek Mazumdar (50-55 kg), Bulen Buragohain (55-60kg), Rantu Moran (60-65 kg), Abhinab Saikia (65-70kg), Bijay Deka (70-75 kg), Manab Talukdar (75-80kg), Tonmoy Dowarah (80-85 kg) and Kharanda Regon (85-90 kg).
