GUWAHATI: The Assam Police arrested five more persons for defending Pakistan in the Pahalgam attack, directly or indirectly, on social media.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that more arrests are on the cards as part of the state government’s ongoing crackdown against ‘treason’.

The five arrested persons are Md. Jabir Hussain from Hailakandi, Md. AK Bahauddin and Md. Javed Mazumdar from Silchar, Md. Mahahar Mia from Morigaon, and Md. Sahil Ali from Sivasagar. All these five uploaded their posts on social media defending Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

AUIDF MLA Aminul Islam, who had been arrested yesterday, was produced in a court in Nagaon today. The court sent him to a four-day police remand.

Significantly, AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal made it clear that the statement made by AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam on the Pahalgam attack is ‘his personal, not of the party’. “We want the government of India to give exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack,” Ajmal said.

Reiterating his stand on Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, the Chief Minister said, “Assam will not tolerate any individual who directly or indirectly supports or defends Pakistan in connection with the heinous attack in Pahalgam.”

The Chief Minister said that the government has already asked the police to keep a close watch on the social media and act tough as and when they find anyone from the state defending Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.
