GUWAHATI: In an unprecedented move, the Assam cabinet took the decision to prohibit sales and consumption of beef in all public places, including hotels and restaurants, in the state from today.
After the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Assam has ‘the Assam Cattle Preservation Act’ that prohibits cow slaughter, besides some other restrictions. Selling of beef is also prohibited in Assam in a five km radius around temples and xatras and also in areas with majority Hindu, Sikh, and Jain populations. The Act also restricts the sales of beef or beef products in permitted locations.”
The Chief Minister said, “The cabinet brought amendments to the existing Act and prohibited the sale and consumption of beef in community meetings, apart from hotels and restaurants. The Act has provisions of strict action in the event of its violation.”
The Chief Minister further said that for the past few days, Congress MP Rakibul Hussain and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah have been giving an impression among the public that they also do not favour beef eating in the state. “The cabinet took this decision after a threadbare discussion on the two Congress leaders’ views. It is up to the two Congress leaders whether they will agree with today’s cabinet decision,” he said.
