Guwahati: On the first birthday since his untimely passing, the people of Assam came together to pay a touching tribute to Zubeen Garg, the beloved singer and cultural icon. The commemorations began at midnight outside his residence in Kahilipara, where devoted fans gathered to sing his cherished songs, display creative tributes, and release sky lanterns, symbolising the light he continues to shine on music and culture. Zubeen’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, joined the outpouring of affection, highlighting the deep bond he shared with his community.

The tribute extended into the morning with the unveiling of a statue in his memory, accompanied by various cultural programmes across Sonapur Dimoria. These events included blood donation drives, planting of 100 Nahor saplings, traditional performances such as Bhaona, and devotional recitals, all serving as heartfelt acts of remembrance and gratitude for Zubeen’s immense contributions.

Zubeen Garg’s musical journey began at a very young age, and over a career spanning three decades, he recorded over 40,000 songs in more than 40 languages, fusing Assamese folk traditions with contemporary influences. His versatility and soulful voice made him a cherished figure not only in Assam but across India, earning him titles such as “Luit Kontho” — the voice of the Brahmaputra.

The day’s ceremonies captured the profound sorrow of his loss alongside the celebration of an extraordinary life that inspired millions. Zubeen Garg’s legacy remains ever alive, his voice continuing to resonate and uplift generations even in his absence.
