Guwahati: At the end of the counting of votes in the election for three top posts of Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) on Sunday, noted litterateur and researcher Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami was elected as the new president of the topmost literary organization of the state.
The post of vice president went to Padum Rajkhowa, a former general secretary of AXX. Also, Debojit Borah was elected general secretary.
There was a total of eight candidates vying for the top three posts of the august body. Dr. Upen Rabha Hakacham and Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami were the two contenders for the respected post of president, and Dr. Goswami emerged the winner. For the post of vice president, Dr. Bipin Chandra Kalita, Sahir Bhuyan, and Padum Rajkhowa were the main candidates, and Rajkhowa was elected to the second-highest top post. As for the post of general secretary, there were three candidates: Sanjib Kumar Sarma, Ajit Prasad Sharma, and Debojit Borah. The winner for the post was Debojit Borah.
The counting of votes took place at Dadara in Kamrup district, where the executive meeting was held on Sunday. The voting and counting for the top posts also took place here. Prior to the voting, ballot boxes were taken from Meghdoot Bhawan, the General Post Office, or GPO, of Guwahati.
A volatile situation was witnessed at the executive meeting, and there were reports of fisticuffs taking place prior to the election.
Meanwhile, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to congratulate the new president of AXX, Dr. Basant Kumar Goswami. He expressed the hope that, under the leadership of Dr. Goswami, AXX will make further progress.
