Guwahati: Despite unfavourable weather in many parts of the state in the last few days, the campaigning by candidates and political parties for the upcoming panchayat election has reached its peak. The campaigning for the first phase of the polls will conclude on Wednesday. The polling for the first phase in Upper Assam and Barak Valley districts is scheduled to take place on May 2.
According to the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC), the preparation for the first phase of the panchayat election 2025 is almost complete. The districts headed for phase one polling are Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhumi.
ASEC sources said there are 21,920 posts for members of Gaon Panchayats in the state. Against these posts, 2,565 seats have been won uncontested. The total number of contesting candidates for the remaining Gaon Panchayat seats is 53,456. The election to the Gaon Panchayats is apolitical in nature, while that for the Zilla Parishads and Anchalik Panchayats is political, and the candidates are allowed to use party symbols.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today addressed three rallies in Mikir Bheta in the Morigaon district, Dipila in the Darrang district and Rangia in Kamrup district. He sought the people’s support for the BJP-AGP alliance candidates. Talking to the media, the CM said, “Both the BJP and AGP are hopeful of a good result in the panchayat election.”
On Tuesday, Agriculture Minister and AGP president Atul Bora addressed an election rally at Bokakhat in the Golaghat district. He also appealed to the people attending the rally to vote for the AGP-BJP alliance candidates.
Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah today addressed an election rally at Ranganadi in the Lakhimpur district, where he sought the people’s support for the Congress party candidates. This time the Congress party is going it alone in the panchayat election, whereas the BJP and AGP are contesting together.
The panchayat election will be conducted through paper ballots. The second phase polling is slated to be held on May 7, and the counting of ballots is to take place on May 11.
