BOKAKHAT: A fully grown Royal Bengal tiger was brutally killed on Thursday morning around 10 AM at Borbil in Budhe Chapori under Khumtai revenue circle, in Dergaon PS of Golaghat district. The tiger, hiding in the paddy fields of Borbil, was first spotted near Kalabari of Tinigharia-Borchapori by local residents.

Alarmed and angered, locals from all directions surrounded the area with sticks and other weapons and beat the tiger to death. It is worth mentioning that this particular tiger had been terrorizing the area for a long time now. Earlier, it had killed a man named Gopinath Mili and several domestic animals.

The angry mob not only killed the tiger mercilessly but also cut off its ears, teeth, and legs and skinned the carcass. Later, forest and police officials, in the presence of a magistrate, recovered the tiger's body and transported it to the office of the Forest Range Officer in Golaghat, where a post-mortem was conducted and the body cremated.

The tiger, which had been roaming the area, including Chelek village and nearby regions for several days, met its end after spreading panic for months. Though the forest department was aware of the threat and the earlier fatal attack, no measures were taken to tranquillize or capture the tiger and relocate it, which ultimately led to its death at the hands of a violent mob, it is alleged.

Later, a person was arrested in connection with the tiger's killing. The accused has been taken to Dergaon Police Station. According to sources, a joint operation by the police and army was on to track down those involved. Over a hundred people are suspected to be involved in the killing.

It is notable that Brahmaputra Chapori, extending from Kaziranga National Park, has become a habitat for tigers and other wildlife.
