New Delhi: Ace Sprinter Hima Das presented Assam's traditional gamcha to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an interaction with India's 2022 Commonwealth Games contingent at his residence.
As India finished fourth in the medal tally with a total of 61 medals - 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze, the Prime Minister hosted the Indian athletes to hail their achievements.
Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Hima wrote, ''Elated to receive blessings from our honourable Prime Minister - Shri @narendramodi Ji, by virtue of Commonwealth Games 2022. Fortunate to have presented him with our traditional gamcha, wrapped with immense gratitude from all of Assam."
In the women's 200m final, Hima missed out on a berth as she finished 10th in the semi-final at the 2022 Games which recently ended. The sprinter from Assam missed out on the final berth by the barest of margins - 0-01s. She finished third in the second of the three heats in the women's 100m semi-final.
She clocked 23.42s but Australia's Ella Conolly and grabbed the second position and the automatic qualified for semi-final Heat 2 with a timing of 23.41s. However, Hima finished 10th overall in the semi-final.
Speaking while interacting with athletes, PM Modi said that is happy all of the players have taken time out of from their schedule to come to meet him at his residence as members of the family.
''I too feel like all other Indians and I feel proud to be talking to you. I welcome you all. This is just the beginning for our Yuva Shakti...the Golden age of Indian sports has just begun! In the past few weeks, nation recorded two major achievements in field of sports. Besides historic performance in CWG, for the first time country hosted Chess Olympiad," he added.
He further asserted that the country not only successfully hosted (Chess Olympiad) but continuing its rich tradition in Chess, gave its best performance.
''I also congratulate all players who participated and those who won medals at the Chess Olympiad," he added.
