ITANAGAR: The West Siang district administration has recently prohibited all kinds of fishing activities from April/May to October 2025 in all open natural river/streams in the district with immediate effect.

In an executive order passed under Section 152 of the BNSS, deputy commissioner Mamu Hage prohibited fishing activities as the breeding season of fishes has started with the onset of the monsoon.

“It has been noticed in the past that fish stock in the natural open water is dwindling at an alarming rate, which may cause aquatic ecological imbalance,” the order read.

It said some individuals and fishermen are reported to be engaged in fishing from various rivers, streams by using gill netting, fishing nets, explosives, chemicals, arrow shooting, etc.

The DC said that reckless fishing in the natural open water might deplete the existing fish stock in the natural rivers, streams, etc., which would cause irreparable damage to the aquatic ecology in the long run, and it is necessary to check and regulate the rampant killing of fish in order to conserve the dwindling fish population in the open natural water.

Directing the Superintendent of Police and administrative officers in their respective jurisdiction to enforce the order in letter and spirit, she said anyone found violating the order be reported to her office for legal action under the appropriate section of the law.
