BOKAKHAT: ‘Bandarchang’, located in the border area between Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts, is considered a vital place in Karbi Anglong. For years, this land of Bandarchang has been known as a confluence point between the hill tribes and the plains people. Every Thursday, a weekly market is held here, which has become an integral part of life for people from both Karbi Hills and various areas of Golaghat district, including Numaligarh and Morongi.
Numerous goods are bought and sold in this market among people descending from the Karbi Hills and those traveling from different parts of Golaghat. Residents of Karbi Anglong purchase vegetables, clothes, and various daily essentials brought from Golaghat. On the other hand, people from Golaghat buy vegetables grown in the Karbi Hills, potatoes, goats, fish, pigs, and various handicrafts from the hill communities. This market has truly become a place of unity. It has also become highly important for the farmers and traders of both districts.
Moreover, many students from different villages under Morongi Mouza in Golaghat district attend the LP, ME, and high schools located in Bandarchang for their education. A significant number of patients from Morongi travel to the under-construction 20-bed hospital in Karbi Anglong for better medical treatment. Likewise, many people from Karbi Anglong visit weekly markets in Golaghat district such as Kanaighat, Numaligarh, Bihora, and Deopani every Sunday. From Bandarchang, if one crosses the Kaliyani River at Rongbong, it is just a five-kilometer distance to National Highway 39. However, it is unfortunate that even today, farmers, traders, students, and patients must cross the Kaliyani River using small and risky boats. Additionally, the five-kilometer road from the Kaliyani River to Panka Chariali remains unpaved, causing great inconvenience to commuters.
In light of these challenges, residents of both districts have been demanding from the government and concerned authorities the construction of a proper road connecting Panka Chariali to Bandarchang, as well as a bridge over the Kaliyani River.
