DOOMDOOMA: Under the auspices of Assam Science Society (ASS), Doomdooma Branch and with active co-operation of Internal Quality Assessment Cell (IQAC), Doomdooma College, science departments and Assam Science Society, Rupai Branch National Science Day (NSD) was observed at the conference hall of the college today with Dr Meena Devi Baruah, President, ASS, Doomdooma Branch, in the chair.
The programme got underway with lighting of lamps in front of the portrait of Sir CV Raman by the Working President, ASS Rupai Branch and senior journalist Manoj Dutta. Thereafter Runumoni Dutta and her team performed the signature song of the Assam Science Society ‘Gyan Simonar Suruj Ami.’
General Secretary, ASS, Doomdooma Branch Dhiren Deka explained the objectives of the meeting. While explaining the life and achievements of Sir CV Raman, he said that the bold step of the then Vice-Chancellor Asutosh Mukherjee in offering the Palit Professorship to Raman by even making amendment to Calcutta University (CU) rule to offer the post to a person not having a foreign degree, was the turning point in Raman’s life that paved the way for him to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
Dr Kamaleswar Kalita, Principal, Doomdooma College, dwelt on the main theme of the National Science Day, ‘Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for VIKSIT Bharat.’ He said that for India to become a developed country, it has to provide food security to its people as primarily an agricultural country. Again, India needs to invest more than the current amount of percentage of GDP in the education sector, he added. Dr Kalita further said that since 50 percent of India’s population now is youth, India could move towards global leadership only if it was able to empower this large section of young generation and send them abroad as human resources.
The meeting was also addressed by Associate Professor Deepak Ranjan Barua, Co-ordinator of IQAC of the college Manoj Dutta and Ratul Gogoi, Working President and General Secretary, ASS Rupai Branch.
In her Presidential speech, Dr Meena Devi Baruah emphasized on eradicating superstitions and obscurantism from the society and regretted that India, the world’s most populated country, has failed so far to transform its population of over 1.4 billion into human resources.
The meeting ended with the Asam Sangeet ‘O Mor Aponar Desh’ after General Secretary Dhiren Deka offered the vote of thanks.
