Guwahati: Social media is not only a platform to share your thoughts and photographs but it can also be a medium of saving lives.

Assam Police has proved the same by preventing a man from committing suicide.

Initially, the man shared a Facebook post about ending his life.

Timely action and prompt response on social media by Assam Police  has saved the man's life. The man hails from from Sonitpur's Dhekiajuli.

A quick enquiry started following a Twitter user by the name Neil Nikhil shared a screenshot of a Facebook post by the man informing about his intention to commit suicide.

In his tweet, Nikhil also tagged the top officials of Assam Police and Dhekiajuli MLA Ashok Singhal.

GP Singh, ADGP (L&O) responded quickly to the tweet and thus started the chain of coordination to track the man.

While sensing the seriousness of the case, Harmeet Singh, ADGP (Modernisation-Logistics) immediately instructed Sonitpur Police to look into the matter "urgently".

Within two hours of the first tweet, by 6:16 pm, Sonitpur Police took to the microblogging site Twitter informing that the man has been found and is being counselled.

Following Sonitpur Police's tweet, twitterati lauded the Assam Police for saving a man's life in the nick of time.

MLA Singhal also acknowledged the Assam Police officials for their timely and quick responses.

After extensive counseling the man also thanked Assam Police and said it was his "fault" to think about ending his life.

"It was my damn fault to commite suicide... life is ape ial one and I wanna live it.. for this S P and O C visited my place and have taken place and requested not to repeat such kind of things..," the man wrote on Facebook.
