SIVASAGAR: The historic town of Sivasagar witnessed the commemoration of the 64th birth anniversary of martyr and fearless journalist Parag Kumar Das on Monday evening. The event was jointly organized by conscious citizens, journalists, and representatives from various organizations. The ceremony took place near the bust of Xudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika at Dolmukh Chariali.
Senior citizens, educationists, and social activists Jyotiprasad Dutta and Bakul Barthakur inaugurated the event by lighting candles and offering floral tributes in front of a portrait of martyr Parag Kumar Das. In the gathering, journalist and writer Pranjal Rajguru welcomed the gatherings, followed by a speech from Monirul Islam Bora, Central President of Ujoni Axom Muslim Kalyan Parishad and a senior journalist. Bora emphasized that Parag Kumar Das remains immortal in the hearts of the people for his love for the nation, commitment to national duty, and fearless pursuit of truth. He highlighted Das’s emphasis on economic independence as a crucial step towards Assam’s self-determination, acknowledging his deep studies and powerful writings that awakened the spirit of the people.
Bora also spoke on the significance of February 24, marking the 199th anniversary of the ‘Yandabo Treaty,’ which led to the decline of Assam’s independence.
Senior journalist Anamuddin Ahmed also delivered a speech, shedding light on Parag Kumar Das’ invaluable contributions to national consciousness, his struggle for self-reliance, and his economic vision. Ahmed further highlighted the historical context of the Yandabo Treaty, signed between colonial British and Burmese, which resulted in the loss of Assam’s sovereignty. Ahmed lamented the downfall of the Ahom dynasty due to internal betrayal and warned that Assam’s strength today still lies in unity and brotherhood. He urged people to remain vigilant against divisive forces that exploit Assam’s political landscape for personal gains.
Ankuron Phukan, Central President of Ahom Sena, also delivered a speech on the historical context of Assam’s claim to independence. He stated that the Yandabo Treaty, which had no representation from Assam, was essentially an unjust agreement between the British and the Burmese. He also stated that on behalf of the Ahom Sena, a formal letter has been sent to the British Government, seeking clarification on the controversial treaty and its validity.
Pankaj Khound, President of ‘Sangrami Sena Assam,’ expressed regret over the lack of justice for the brutal assassination of Parag Kumar Das. He called for unity in resolving Assam’s issues and moving forward as a strong and united community.
Members of the Sivasagar Jagriti Mahila Samiti, along with local businessmen and residents, actively participated in the event, marking the solemn occasion with discussions on Assam’s past, present, and future.
