TEZPUR: In a vibrant display of youth energy, empowerment, and resilience, the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Sonitpur under the Department of Women and Child Development and the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, successfully organized a dynamic sports event on July 22 in collaboration with the JIVANTI CSR initiative of Dabur India Ltd and Tezpur-based community organization Regional Heritage and Sustainable Futures Foundation (RHSF). The event was held under the twin flagship schemes Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) with the aim of promoting girl child empowerment and sensitizing youth on the importance of a drug-free lifestyle.

The sports meet featured two major competitions: an Inter-District Boxing Championship and a friendly Football Match, both of which drew significant participation and enthusiasm from the local youth and the wider community. Around 100 budding boxers from various parts of Assam came together to compete in a high-energy boxing championship that highlighted skill, determination, and the fighting spirit of the region’s young athletes. Adding to the fervour of the day was a football match between two district-level men’s teams, symbolizing the growing importance of sports amongst youth despite the lure of drugs.

The event was graced by Major Ujjawal from the 134 TA Battalion, who interacted with participants and encouraged them to pursue sports and discipline as powerful alternatives to substance abuse. Also present at the event was Rubi Kalita, District Social Welfare Officer, Sonitpur, who emphasized the government’s commitment to empowering girls through holistic development, especially through initiatives that blend sports, health, and awareness. The Factory Head and HR Head of Dabur India Ltd, Balipara, were also present and encouraged the participants while urging the local community to understand the importance of education and prevention of substance abuse among the youth.

Speaking at the event, the DSWO, Sonitpur, stated, “Through such platforms, we not only create visibility for our girls but also instil confidence and promote a healthy lifestyle among all youth. Both the schemes, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, are about securing the future of our younger generation.”

The District Hub for Empowerment of Women, as the nodal agency, ensured that the event also served as an awareness campaign with on-site posters and interactive sessions on the perils of substance abuse, mental health awareness, and the importance of education and sports for the girl child.

As the sun set on an inspiring day of punches, goals, cheers, and camaraderie, the event stood as a testament to how sports can be a vehicle for social change creating empowered, drug-free, and resilient youth ready to shape the future of Sonitpur and beyond.
