NALBARI: Nalbari district, which is commonly known as the city of wisdom or the Navadweep, holds immense religious and cultural significance, being home to several ancient temples and sacred sites. The district has long been a center for religious practices, philosophical discourse, and the study of Sanskrit scriptures. Historically, it was a hub for Sanskrit education, with scholars and priests gathering here to learn and propagate Hindu rituals, astrology, and sacred texts.
Sri Sri Billeswar Devalaya, believed to be the oldest Shiva temple in Assam, stands in Belsor as a testimony to this vibrant religious and educational legacy of which the first recorded date of origin is supposed to date back to 252 AD during the reign of King Nagaksa.
The recent establishment of the Kaal Bhairav shrine within the temple further enriches its spiritual relevance, attracting devotees seeking protection and blessings. The temple's continuous role in fostering devotion, cultural identity, and spiritual learning makes it a cornerstone of Nalbari's religious history, preserving age-old traditions while embracing new spiritual dimensions.
Billeswar Devalaya, now graced by the presence of Baba Kaal Bhairav, continues to be a significant center of spiritual devotion, enriched by faith and belief. Few days back, the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the idol of Kaal Bhairav Baba at Sri Sri Billeswar Devalaya was performed in the presence of District Commissioner, Nalbari, cum Chairperson of Devalaya committee Varnali Deka. The idol was established by her as an expression of her pure spiritual devotion while a large number of devotees participated in the sacred rituals of the consecration.
According to the Secretary of the Management Committee of the Devalaya, Ranjit Mishra, the idol of Kaal Bhairav Baba was sculpted by sculptors of repute Hemanta Sarma and Lokesh Sarma of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The beautiful idol, weighing approximately 1 ton, has been carved out from a single block of black marble.
This event marks the establishment of the first Kaal Bhairav temple in Nalbari as well as one of the few in the entire North-East region enhancing the spiritual and historical significance of the temple complex. Kaal Bhairav, a fierce (Roudra) manifestation of Lord Shiva, holds profound spiritual importance in Hinduism as a guardian deity who eradicates fear, protects devotees from negative forces, and eliminates evil.
District Commissioner Varnali Deka highlighted the significance of unity, faith, and cultural preservation during the idol Pratishtha ceremony and emphasizing the need for positivity in today's community life, she urged everyone to collectively protect and promote cultural heritage for future generations.
