BOKAKHAT: The sudden and mysterious death of law student Namrata Bora, daughter of Ramen Kumar Bora from Bachapathar, under Kamargaon in Golaghat district, has deeply shocked the local community. On the night of June 3, Namrata was reportedly involved in a suspicious accident while returning from Meghalaya in a luxury car with five youths.
Describing the incident as a premeditated murder, her family has demanded a proper investigation and called for the direct intervention of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. The family has also urged a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.
As per the FIR lodged by Namrata’s father at Nongpoh Police Station, on the day of the incident, Namrata was travelling in a luxury vehicle (AS01ED9578) owned by Anaytullah Batsar, son of AIUDF MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasimi. Police have questioned Anaytullah along with others who were present in the vehicle during the accident, Gayatri Bora (25 years) from Mangaldoi, Mriganka Baruah (26 years) from Golaghat, and Pragya Dihingia (26 years) from Charaideo.
Namrata’s father alleged that Anaytullah was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. Following the crash, he allegedly fled the scene with the vehicle. Namrata had to be taken in a critical condition to Nongpoh Hospital by two friends and some locals in a tourist cab. According to her friend, at that time, her oxygen level was only 13%, due to which she passed away.
Surprisingly, it was a young woman from New Delhi who first informed the family early on June 4 about Namrata’s involvement in an accident in Meghalaya. Namrata’s father then contacted the other individuals who had accompanied her to Meghalaya using phone numbers obtained from the informant. He later learned that they had gone to Shillong to watch the sunrise when the accident took place on their return journey.
Namrata’s father has also filed an FIR at Dispur Police Station, since she was residing at Neha Apartment under that jurisdiction. High-ranking police officials from Guwahati have also been in touch with the bereaved father.
Upon hearing of the tragic event, Bokakhat MLA and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora reached out to the family and also contacted senior police officials. Sources said that arrangements were being made to bring Anaytullah and the others under the scope of Assam Police’s investigation. The family alleges that under the influence of Anaytullah, Namrata became the victim of a planned murder.
Namrata’s father further claimed that although Anaytullah was driving during the accident, he later produced one Mohammad Islam Haque Choudhury at Nongpoh Police Station claiming him to be the driver. However, Senior Advocate Hrishikesh Borgohain, who was present at the police station, raised suspicion, prompting an immediate investigation which revealed that it was indeed Anaytullah who was driving the vehicle and not Islam. Her father argued that had Anaytullah not fled with the car, timely medical intervention could have saved her life. He remarked, “If she was admitted to a good hospital in time, her life might have been saved. We are demanding proper investigation and the Chief Minister’s intervention.” Namrata’s mother has emotionally appealed for justice and a fair investigation.
According to Namrata’s father, on the night of the incident, Namrata left Neha Apartment in casual clothing, something she never did while going out. This raised further suspicions in the grieving family. They also revealed that Namrata had left behind her iPhone and a precious stone-studded ring in her room. Sources further indicate that Namrata told the apartment’s security guard that she was going to the hospital when she left.
Various indigenous student organizations such as the Tai Ahom Students’ Union, Chutia Students’ Union, Gorkha Students’ Union, and tea tribe organizations, along with the people of Kamargaon, have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister via the Bokakhat Subdivision Officer demanding a thorough and fair investigation. Meanwhile, Anaytullah, the MLA’s son, is reportedly absconding.
