New Kamakhya Chief Priest Elected, Over 300 People Cast Votes

GUWAHATI: Over 300 people cast ballots for the next Dolois of Guwahati's Kamakhya Temple, a famous Shaktipeeth.

On Sunday, a Doloi poll was held at the Kamakhya Temple to elect a new Shaktipeeth administration council. Five priests ran in this year's Doloi election, which was sponsored by the Kamrup Metro district government.

The mother goddess Kamakhya is honoured in the Kamakhya Shrine, a Sakta temple. It is one of the first of the 51 Shakti Pithas. The ten Mahavidyas of Saktism are Kali, Tara, Tripura Sundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, and Kamalatmika, and it is also the most sacred location among a network of independent old temples dedicated to them. It may be located on the Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, Assam, India's western part. Tripurasundari, Matangi, and Kamala live in the temple complex, while the other seven live in separate temples. It is a well-known Hindu event.

The Kamakya Temple, which was originally an autonomous place of worship, became connected with state power when it was patronised by the Mleccha, then the Pala rulers of Kamarupa, and finally the Koch and the Ahoms. In the Kalika Purana, written under the Pala dynasty, the goddess Kamakhya, who symbolised the territory and the Kamarupa realm, was related to Naraka, the legitimising progenitor of the Kamarupa rulers.

In the Doloi election, Mohit Chandra Sarma, Kabindra Prasad Sarma, Himadri (Himu) Sarma, Manash Sarma, and Phanindra Nath Sarma were among the candidates. 384 voters cast ballots to elect the Bordoloi and Sorudoloi of Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. At 4 p.m. on Sunday, the Doloi poll results were announced. Himadri (Himu) Sarma was named Sorudoloi of Kamakhya Temple, while Kabindra Prasad Sarma was named Bordoloi.

Himadri Sarma earned 172 votes, while Kabindra Prasad Sarma received 220 votes. Mohit Chandra Sarma, the former Doloi of Kamakhya Temple, earned 166 votes, followed by Manash Sarma (162) and Phanindra Nath Sarma (162).

Only members of the Bordeuri group are eligible to vote in Kamakhya Temple's Doloi elections. After winning the Doloi election in 2011 but losing to Mohit Chandra Sarma in 2016, Kabindra Prasad Sarma was re-elected as the Bordoloi of Kamakhya Temple for the second time in 2021. The Kamakhya Temple's management board, one of 51 Shaktipeeths atop the scenic Nilachal Hill, is elected for a five-year term.
