Arsenic workshop begins at Majuli

Majuli, Oct 11: Majuli DC Pallav Gopal Jha on Wednesday inaugurated a two-day orientation programme on “Safe Water and Health” at the conference hall of Majuli DC Office. In collaboration with the district administration, Majuli & Safe Water Centre for Healthy Assam, the Arsenic Knowledge and Action Network and Piramal Swasthya Management & Research Institute have organized the workshop cum training programme on arsenic contaminated drinking water and its health effects. Three arsenic expert from Kolkata, Guwahati & Jorhat took part as the resource persons in the inaugural day session today.
Expert on Arsenic Health hazards from KPC Medical College, Kolkata Dr. K K Majumdar discussed on the topic “Identification of Health Effects of Arsenic : A Health Perspective” and made a power-point presentation on the diseases caused by arsenic contaminated water & foods and their symptoms. Another expert from CISR-NEIST, Jorhat Dr. R L Goswami spoke on the topic “Arsenic and Water Quality in Assam : A Technology Perspective”. The third resource person, Professor Dr. Mamata Goswami from Cotton College, Guwahati made a presentation on “Experiences from the Field in Assam : A Community Perspective”. It was attended by the Medical & Para-medical Officials from the district including I/c Jt. Director of Health Services, Majuli, SDM&HO of Kamalabari Block PHC, officials from PHE dept., NGO representatives etc. On Thursday, the participants and resource persons will visit the most arsenic contamination areas Chilakola, Karatipar & Sriluit GPs and study the various aspects and health hazard effects of arsenic contamination in drinking water in those areas in Namoni Majuli, stated a press release.
