Aircel denies shutting down operation

From a Reporter
SHILLONG, Nov 14: Following media reports that Aircel will be shutting down its services in Shillong and other parts of the country, the telecom operator in Meghalaya on Tuesday denied any such move. “In its 12-year journey, Aircel has strengthened its customer base in Meghalaya to around seven lakh,” Aircel’s Circle Business Head Nilaj Mahalanavis told media persons here.   When asked on non-availability of network coverage in border areas, the official informed reporters that as per the guidelines of Department of Telecom, all the mobile companies in the country have to stop their network coverage before 500 metres of the international border.  Stating that installing mobile towers in Shillong is a major challenge, Mahalanavis further claimed that mobile towers are safe. He also stated that Aircel in the past two to three years has installed around 70 towers in Meghalaya.
