Guwahati: Assam on Tuesday registered 572 more COVID-19 cases in a single day. Somewhat remarkably, 380 of these cases were registered in the capital city of Guwahati alone.

Assam's health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who made the grim announcement on Twitter, stated that the "need for caution can't be overemphasized." This surge in cases has been witnessed at a time when the city has been put under lockdown as a final measure to halt the spread of the COVID-19. This latest lockdown is being widely touted as a "battle for survival" for the city that has reported hundreds of cases without travel history at the community level.

Even so, in spite of the lockdown, the number of cases in the city continue to tick upwards. A day earlier, 172 more cases were reported by the Government, triggering panic among the masses.

Tuesday, June 30, also saw the number of COVID-19 deaths in the state rise to 12, as a man who had been taken dead to the GMCH Hospital in the heart of the city tested positive posthumously after his sample was whisked off for tests

Meanwhile, the total number of cases in the state has risen to 8,407. Out of these, 5,647 cases have been discharged, leaving the total number of active cases at 2,745. 12 deaths have been reported so far. In June, India has seen a significant bump in the number of COVID-19 cases, with the number rising at a breakneck pace. The country has seen over 5.85 lakh cases till June 30 — this means that over 67% of total cases were registered in the past 30 days.
