Guwahati: Assam has been witnessing a spurt in public outrage and concern over the Baghjan well fire in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district.
Voicing out his opinion on the tragic incident, Assam's musical maverick Joi Barua on Friday stated that the Baghjan oil well fire is a disaster that should be ended sooner rather than later.
Taking to Instagram, the singer expressed his sorrow at the raging fire in the eco-sensitive zone. "A fire burning over 2 months. Thousands of people in relief camps. A health disaster looming. A habitat in danger. Let's put an end to this please sooner than later," Joi wrote in his post.
The Baghjan blowout has affected many houses, paddy fields, trees, and animals (wild and domestic) around it.
A massive explosion took place near well number 5 of Oil India Limited in Baghjan on July 22.
As per reports, among the experts and engineers of Oil India Limited (OIL) who were engaged in controlling the gas and oil emission at the site, three foreign experts were injured.
On May 27 a blowout took place at the site after the well suddenly became active while OIL was carrying out workover operations in the gas-producing well. The well caught fire on June 9. Two OIL firemen also perished near the site of the fire.
It is worth noting that artistes across Assam have had a history of raising the pitch of public issues. Recently, we have also seen public concern over illegal mining reported from the Dehing Patkai (India's largest lowland rainforest).
